I learnt about Alliance for African Women Initiative through the UN's online volunteering site, when I replied to a request for volunteers for to help write project proposals.
Philip, the Programs Coordinator at AFAWI, called me and we started working together in July 2011. My first task was to develop a project proposal on “Resolution of sanitation challenges in the KWABENYA D/A School in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana”.
With Philip’s aid we prepared a successful funding proposal as part of a wider project AWAFI is implementing, called CIDA. The CIDA project aims to bridge the gender gap between boys and girls in schools and create equal opportunities for all. The context of the project was to promote sexual awareness, particularly healthy menstrual practices and to communicate and educate African school girls about women’s issues.
Our current project is to develop a proposal as part of the livelihood project that AFAWI has launched for women living with HIV/AIDS to give them a sustainable source of income and an understanding of business skills. Within the scope of this proposal is the development of a poultry farm.
And a little bit about me: I am Greek and my educational background is in Chemical Engineering with specialization in environmental engineering (MSc, PhD). I am 35 years old and currently working for an environmental protection company in Greece, where I live. I have also lived for a few years in California, USA.
I greatly enjoy working with AFAWI and I'm looking forward to my next project!
