Under this sector, AFAWI currently has 2 projects on going: AFAWI Teen Club and Operation 57.
AFAWI TEEN CLUB: The AFAWI Teen Club seeks to bring together school-going children on a weekly basis to discuss amongst themselves issues of concern such as "Negative effects of Peer Pressure," "Dangers of Pre-Marital Sex," and "Dangers of Smoking." Members of the Club also periodically undertake educational trips to broaden their perspective on the issues discussed. The Teen Club currently meets at the Green Hill International School every weekend.
OPERATION 57: is a Preventive and Behaviour Change Communication outreach educational program for Junior High Schools in Ga East District Assembly. The project seeks to benefit pupils of Junior High Schools, currently Ga East District Assembly inside of Accra. However, Ghana has 57 Junior High Schools and the project hopes to cover all 57 schools. Adolescents are biologically and socially vulnerable to sexual infections, and girls are up to six times more prone to infections than boys of the same age. As a poverty-stricken urban area in Ghana, HIV/AIDS is the leading cause of death among the youth and young adults in Ga East District.
The baseline survey which was conducted in Junior High Schools in Ga East District by AFAWI revealed that young children are ready to defend their rights to become great leaders if given the opportunity. It also revealed that young children can be a source of information to both parents and their peers. Therefore we believe that such potential future leaders should be given the opportunity to champion advocacy on HIV/AIDS, sexual maturation, and the rights of women and children.
