RESEARCH PROJECT ON DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND MARITAL RAPE
Domestic Violence and Marital Rape are issues that effect women worldwide. However, these issues continue to remain almost invisible to Ghana’s society and culture. Few organizations have published research on the subject, and the media does not indulge in the occurrences of gender based violence that occur daily. The subject is taboo and often upsetting to bring up in every-day life. We are currently performing a research study looking at the issues of domestic violence and marital rape among market women in the greater Accra area.
We are surveying over 500 women and over 100 men on these issues as well as holding focus groups and interviews in order to obtain more qualitative information.
Once we obtain our information, we will analyze the data in order to create statistical information on these issues, as well as look at trends in interview and focus group responses.
We will create a report of our findings and use the information to look at possible methods of action against these pressing issues that Ghanaian women face daily. The goals of the project are as follows:
- To assess the severity, complexity and characteristics of the existing issue of domestic violence and marital rape in the Accra market community
- To identify the needs of this community in regards to these issues and to determine potential methods of action against domestic violence and marital rape
- To publicize the research findings in order to spread awareness to all of Ghana in hopes of creating change.
