Domestic violence and marital rape affect women worldwide. However, these issues continue to remain almost invisible in Ghana’s society and culture. The subject is considered too taboo so is not discussed openly. Few organizations have published research on the subject and the media doesn’t report the daily occurrences of gender based violence.
We are currently carrying out a study looking at the issues of domestic violence and marital rape among women working in markets in the greater Accra area. We are surveying over 500 women and over 100 men as well as holding focus groups and interviews in order to obtain both statistical results to establish trends and in-depth qualitative information.
The goals of the project are:
1. To assess the characteristics of the existing issues of domestic violence and marital rape in the Accra market community.
2. To identify the needs of this community in regards to these issues and to determine potential methods of action against domestic violence and marital rape.
3. To publicize the research findings in order to create awareness within Ghana in the hope of creating change.
