Health Screen Project

August 2 – 22, 2020

Health interns are invited to participate in an annual impactful 3 week experience.

Partnering with Ghana Health Services the Health Screen Project holds community health screening days in disadvantaged communities to provide free screening for communicable diseases, counselling and information sessions on health services available to community members.

During the 3 weeks, Health Interns, AFAWI Staff and health practitioners will be working in two communities, to screen for HIV/AIDs, Malaria, Hepatitis B, Blood Pressure, eye screening, Breast Cancer and overall health.

 

AFAWI believes in sustainability for our projects, and believes it’s important to bring together experts and counselors, educators to assist the communities on nutrition, family planning and other health related matters.

 

To continue the sustainability of the Health Screen Project, AFAWI will make a contribution towards the building of a new community clinic.

This special program includes experience on a health project, as well as all meals and 2 trips within Ghana.

General Schedule

Day 1: Arrive at Kotoka, Stay the night at AFAWI hostel facility

 

Day 2-4: Orientation at the AFAWI Office

After meeting AFAWI Staff, orientation will begin.  You will get an introduction to Ghana, a look at AFAWI Projects and more details about the Health Screen Project.

 

Day 5: Visit the Community Chief and Health Authorities

After breakfast, the bus will pick you up from the hostel facility and take you to the Obonkorkor community in Eastern Region.  We will visit the governing health offices in the community and after lunch visit the Traditional Authorities and Chiefs, who will welcome us into the community to proceed with Health Screening project.

 

Day 6-8: Kumasi

Take a break from the office to visit the Ashanti (Manhaye) Palace, Cultural Centre and don’t forget to bring a swim suit when we visit Lake Bosomtwe.

 

Day 9: Visit the Community Chief of the second community​

Today we will visit the second community of Nkurakan.  We will see the health offices

and after lunch visit the Traditional Authorities and Chiefs.

 

Day 10: Preparation for Health Screening

This day will be spent at the AFAWI office preparing documents and reports for the Health Screening. Please don’t forget your laptop, it’s essential to have digital copies of all

the documents produced for this project.

Day 11: Health Screening in Obonkorkor Community

All your hard work will be worth it to see health care being brought to community members that otherwise could not afford to go to the hospital.  Health Interns will work with doctors and nurses to ensure the health screening process goes smoothly, you will be asked to help counsel clients, perform surveys and education community members of the access they have to community based nurses.

 

Day 12-15: Cape Coast

Cape Coast trip will be full of history and experiences. Bring your dancing shoes for the cultural night.  Bring your running shoes for a small hike through Kakum Park and then off to visit the crocodiles at Hans Cottage.  Last will be an educational visit to the historic slave castles.

Day 16:  Reporting and Social Media

Finishing up all loose ends from last week’s health screening and preparing

social media strategy.

 

Day 17: Preparation for 2nd Health Screening

Health  Interns will make their way again to the AFAWI office in the morning,

to start paper work for the health screening the following day. 

 

Day 18: Health Screening in Nkurakan Community

Round 2 of Health Screening Day!  We will be off to Nkurakan community, to work

alongside doctors and nurses to participate in health screening for community

members.

 

Day 19: Registration for National Health Insurance Cards

To the community hospital in the morning, to begin the registration of National Health

Insurance Cards for all community members who tested positive during the screening.  Health Interns will work side by side with nurses to register community members, help administering the cards and participate in counselling clients and educate about their aliment.

 

Day 20: Rest day and option to Test your bargaining skills

Today is a rest and packing day and in the evening we will share a farewell meal together.

 

Option (€30) If you would like to test your bargaining skills, for some more souvenirs, in the afternoon we will visit the Art Centre in Accra.

 

Day 21:  Departure

 

 

       Community Health Screening Fee Covers:

  • Airport pick-up  

  • Orientation

  • Processing application

  • Administration cost  ​

  • Programme supervision 

  • Three square meals

  • Accommodation

  • A three days weekends tour to Kumasi and Cape Coast

Programme Fee :  €1,350
